Multiculturalism
Facilitated by the eLearning Consortium of Colorado's Multiculturalism Group
Welcome to Week 1 of Rapid Responses
The focus of this first week of rapid responses is on communicating worldwide.
Here's the icebreaker for this week:
We want you to take the plunge and try something you probably have never done before. We want you to jump into a synchronous/asynchronous VOIP system called Discord!
Yes - it primarily used in the gaming culture but it is a fantastic way to communicate. It allows for real time voice, text, sharing of website and videos. But it's not only synchronous it also allows everyone who missed the written conversation, websites and videos to go in and see what they missed. If you want you can also set up your email to receive messages from the conversation. In that way it is a lot like Slack. If you are going to be communicating with people from around the world. It is an excellent discussion forum that allows you to also hop in and talk to them synchronously without needing to start up a Google Hangout, Skype or any type of webinar platform. If you are in discord server, you can immediately just jump in.
So go ahead and jump into our Discord Server - Rapid Response and leave us a message! Tell us what your twitter account is. Our focus for this week is rapid responses to events dealing with multiculturalism. We want you to be able to follow events around the world. Our worked example for this week is a global tweetchat. We will need your twitter account. Our Facilitators will be in Discord from 6 pm to 8 pm on Monday to help anyone who wants to try it out synchronously. Think of it like online office hours. Hope to see you there!

Global Tweetchat Worked Example
The eLearning Consortium of Colorado's Multiculturalism Group will be doing a panel discussion on Hangout on how to setup up a traditional and also a slow tweetchat that uses multiple languages.
Weekly Rapid Response Project (Create and Curate)
Each week you can work individually or in a group. Go into discord and post "Looking for Group" anytime.
Our week starts on Monday and goes until Sunday. The Wednesday night hangout is used for a worked example by the facilitating group.
For your project this week, responding to current issues in multiculturalism, you have several choices.
1) Create a plan for a tweetchat that includes more than one language.
Develop the plan for both a traditional 30 - 60 minute tweetchat and also a slow twitter that lasts 24 hours or longer.
This tweetchat can be tied to significant date, an upcoming event, a book or even an article. Make a meme or a picture for your tweetchat and post it our flickr site. Remember to open it up for discussion. Ask your colleagues for feedback and see if they would click on the link to your event based on that picture. Here's an example of one of our images.
2) Play the interactive fiction game and create an activity for your students
The Migrant - Story of Syrian Refugee (recommendation from the ISTE Games and Sims Network).
3) Hold a Google Hangout on Multiculturalism
Google Hangout automatically records each Hangout and uploads it to your YouTube Channel.
It's your choice. You may decide to do short one person video or a longer one hour panel discussion.
Have other ideas? You can come up with your own ideas for projects on multiculturalism.
Share them in Discord! Remember our goal is to create and curate.
